Meet Your Moxie Team!

Melissa Hinton, Owner....I was never athletic growing up. Outdoorsy, yes, but there were no sports scholarships being won here. Movement-that's what helped me overcome the powerlessness that engulfed me after gaining over a hundred pounds. My children were starting to explore life without me. Rather than sink into depression, my “movement” friends rallied around me with kindness, I became strong enough to participate in life again. I began to trust my own body. I'm a teacher of movement and an empowerment educator. Our adventures, our interactions with family, friends, and those we hold dear -- that is what makes life rich and meaningful. I am a Balanced Body Comprehensively Certified Instructor, Stott Pilates Mat Certified Instructor, Barre Certified Instructor, Group Fitness Trainer, and AEA Aqua Fitness Instructor. I have been teaching fitness including Couch to 5k run groups, Total Body Strength, Mat Pilates, and Boot Camp for more than twelve years.

Gina Whitman, Executive Assistant... With many years in education and most recently an elementary school principal, I joined Moxie to help with the backstage clerical and administrative duties. As a lover of Pilates myself, I know the importance of staying with it and the health benefits that you acquire along the way. If you are debating on becoming a part of the Moxie Family, do not wait a minute longer. Just do it, do it for yourself, you will thank yourself later.

Brittany Mora...As a lifelong dancer and performer, I have never known a life without constant rigorous and athletic movement. As I followed my dance dreams through a creative degree in dance with education, as a fall back, I continued that constant and rigorous movement practice at an average of 8 hours daily in my adult life. It was not until 2014 that I really began to experience the negative effects traditional dance technique often has on dancer's bodies. After knee surgery at 25 due to overuse, I started searching for healthier ways my body could get the same movement medicine but without the wear and tear of technical dance and traditional fitness methods. That search led me from no-impact Barre fitness to Pilates to Yoga and finally to Pilates.

Michael Barbour...Mike Barbour has been leading group Fitness and Pilates classes for over 27 years in and around the Baltimore area. After moving back to North Carolina and finding Moxie Pilates he continues to combine his experience as a Licensed Massage Therapist for over 25 years with his training as a Balanced Body Pilates Instructor. His passion is to bring his participants enjoyable, challenging and fulfilling experiences every time they’re with him. Coming to Pilates through a painful spinal injury and subsequent surgery , he has seen and experienced how Pilates can transform someone’s relationship with themselves and their body. “Pilates is what my mind, body and self esteem craved for so long while I distracted myself with traditional “workouts”. It’s shown me how to use and appreciate my body like an instrument instead of fighting with it and beating it up.”

Emily Stoll...Emily Stoll is a certified Mat and Reformer Pilates instructor through the Moxie Pilates and Barre Teacher Training Program where she was proud to be the program’s first graduate. With a background in dance and aerobic exercise, she brings a strong understanding of movement quality, control, and alignment to every session. Her teaching emphasizes the core principles of Pilates - concentration, control, centering, precision, breath, and flow. Emily aims to meet each client where they are, tailoring classes based on how they’re feeling that day to support strength, stability, and body awareness. She especially enjoys teaching classes that incorporate the jump board or foam roller, using these tools to explore dynamic movement, core activation, and balance. Emily’s goal is to help people build strength and awareness they can carry into daily life. She hopes her classes encourage clients to tune in to their bodies, move with intention, and discover just how capable they are.

Rodniqua Minor...I have always been athletic and been physically active in some way or another throughout my life. Growing up I tried all different types of sports, but my main focus was basketball in which I played pretty competitively during my early years. When I went to college, I found and fell in love with ballroom dancing, but not just any ballroom dancing. I competed in ballroom dancing on a national level for a few years even placing at nationals one year. The later year of my college career, I found barre and after college I fell in love with full body strength training classes like yoga and Pilates. This is when I truly started to see results with my body that I liked.

Barbara Long...Movement has been foundational to my lifestyle since I was a small child studying ballet. My background as a choreographer, ballet teacher, and aerobics instructor has provided a solid foundation for becoming a Pilates instructor. Before these methods were as well known as they are now, I used much of the Pilates classical mat work in training dancers to engage their core and enhance their performance. Experiencing the use of the Reformer has opened a whole new level of understanding the methods Joseph Pilates initially discovered. I love learning, exploring best practices, and engaging with students of all levels to help them achieve their goals.

Skyler Meads...“Born and raised in Goldsboro, NC, I’ve always been fascinated by the human body—so much so that I pursued a degree in biology with a concentration in human anatomy and physiology, originally planning to become a doctor. While that dream never came to fruition, I still found myself in the healthcare field, working on the pharmaceutical side of things. As I got older, I struggled with the changes I saw in my body. It felt like my body was rebelling against me and I no longer had control over it. That all changed in August 2023 when I took my first Pilates class at Moxie with Melissa. What started as a workout quickly became so much more – it became a source of empowerment, community and friendship. Pilates gave me the tools to reconnect with my body and change how I perceived the changes that I struggled to accept.

What Moxie Pilates & Barre can do for you

A Teacher Who Cares

At Moxie, we believe that Pilates and barre are for every SINGLE type of body. As someone who has lost 138 pounds through diet and exercise, I understand that getting healthy is one the hardest challenges a person can take on.

When we work together, our goal will be to help you overcome obstacles and reach your goals. Healthy movement benefits all people and we will work to find any modifications you may need to find the strength and resilience that pilates creates.

Knowledgeable Training Expertise

"Physical fitness can neither be achieved by wishful thinking, nor outright purchase."

                                    --Joseph Pilates

The founder of Pilates hit the nail on the head here and I couldn't agree more!  Fitness can't be wished, willed, bought or stolen--only you can get you there!  Sometimes, you need someone to help light the pathway for you and that's where I come in.

Pilates works beautifully in conjunction with other fitness activities to strengthen the core and balance the supporting muscles for strength and ease of function.

Your Success is Our Goal

I understand that adapting new fitness habits is difficult and often times ends in frustration. My goal is to change your view on fitness, so that it becomes apart of who you are and your lifestyle. I strongly believe that if you practice healthy habits, you will be able to obtain a healthy lifestyle.

The Story So Far

Meet the Owner, Melissa

I was never athletic growing up. Outdoorsy, yes, but there were no sports scholarships being won here.

Movement was the way I found to help me overcome the powerlessness that engulfed me after gaining over a hundred pounds. My children were starting to play and explore life without me.  Rather than sink into the depression that threatened to overwhelm me, I moved.  I reached out to compassionate “movement” friends who rallied around me with kindness, encouragement, and motivation.

Through that journey, I became strong enough to participate in life again rather than be a bystander.

I had less pain, more freedom, and I began to put trust in my own body.

I was ready to jump into the adventure of life.

I am a teacher of movement and an empowerment educator so I can help others find their own inner strength. Together, we strengthen so much more than muscles.  We discover a life with less pain, more play, and more choice.

Our adventures, our interactions with family, friends and those we hold dear -- that's what makes life rich and meaningful.   I teach movement with that same combination of compassion, encouragement, and motivation so you can embrace life and engage with it to the fullest.

More about my training:
